How to Film a Legit Baseball Recruiting Video (Even If You're Using Your Phone)

Let’s be real:

Not every athlete has a film crew and a $5,000 camera setup. But if you’re serious about playing college ball, your recruiting video needs to be clean, clear, and convincing. Coaches don’t care if it was shot on an iPhone—they care about what they can see. So here’s how to create a legit recruiting video that gets attention, even if your phone is your only tool.


1. Keep It Short and Powerful (2-3 Minutes Max)


Coaches don’t have time to sit through 10-minute highlight reels. Keep your video under 3 minutes. Lead with your best plays. Make them want to watch more.


2. What to Include (Position-Specific) Pitchers:

  • 3-5 fastballs from the windup (behind and side angle)

  • 3-5 off-speed pitches (curve, change, slider)

  • Game footage with live at-bats if possible


Position Players:

  • Fielding reps (ground balls, backhands, throws to 1B)

  • Throws from OF/C/INF

  • Batting practice (side and behind angles)

  • Live game footage if you have it


Catchers:

  • Pop times (throws to 2B)

  • Receiving and framing

  • Blocking drills

  • Live game catching (if possible)


3. Camera Angles Matter

  • Use a tripod or stable setup.

  • Behind home plate: for pitching and hitting.

  • Side angle: for swing mechanics or pitching delivery.

  • Elevated if possible (for fielding and full-body positioning).


4. Keep It Raw and Real

Don’t over-edit. Coaches don’t need slow-mo, music, or effects. They want to evaluate you like they would at a live game. Keep cuts quick, transitions clean, and avoid unnecessary fluff.


5. Add Your Info

Start and end with a title screen:

  • Name, Graduation Year, Position(s)

  • School/Club

  • GPA/SAT/ACT (if solid)

  • Contact info (yours and your coach’s)


6. Upload Smart

Post to YouTube (unlisted or public), label clearly: "John Doe | SS | Class of 2026 Recruiting Video." Include links in your email or recruiting profile. Make it easy to access, fast to load, and quick to evaluate.
